Canadaville,a Katrina success story

Wed Aug 29, 2007 at 08:08:46 AM PDT

One of our local news stations had a short Katrina anniversary segment that had me do a 'double take'.
A Canadian businessman,Frank Stronach, built a small village near Simmesport,LA shortly after Katrina destroyed most of New Orleans.

I have never heard about this before today, not on any of the blogs I visit.

He purchased 365 hectares of land outside the corporate limits of Simmesport, a town of 2,300 that hugs the banks of the Atchafalaya River, about 240 kilometres north of New Orleans. The community opened in early December 2005, just 10 weeks after the hurricane.

10 weeks after the hurricane! And 2years after the hurricane we still have debris in the streets in some parts of the city!

maternity group homes

During the end of the debate last night Bush mentioned "Maternity Group Homes" and it made the hair on my neck stand up and I got goosebumps all over.I didn't hear anything else after that I was in such shock. All I could think was,"Magdalene Laundries".
He wants to send our girls off to some hellhole if they unmarried and pregnant. He wants to drag our girls back into the last century!
I grew up in that moral mindset of the fifties where the biggest fear of a young woman was to become pregnant without being married. It never happenen to me,I was on the pill at 16yo,but some of my friend weren't so lucky or daring. They were send away and when they came back they were never the same. They were forced to give up their babies to spare their families the SHAME!
Bush mentioned this in passing and I know a lot of people missed this.It frightens me,because this administration with their fundamentalist morality is a threat to womens freedom.
I didn't see a diary on this subject, but I might have missed it I'm still upset and I had to get this off my chest.
